Pungent Stench were one of the better bands on old-school Nuclear Blast and this album damn well proves it. First time I listened to this album was because I had seen it on a Nuclear Blast order form, I can’t remember exactly why I checked it out but I remember it was either cause of the album cover or the strange title. This album impressed me, the music featured is some really good groovy death stuff. I can’t really label the album per-se considering that the main style is death metal but there’s a mix of grindcore, doom & 70s rock. This album is kind of like Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins. Obviously not musically but in the way that each song blends a bunch of different elements from all sorts of music and manages to turn it into something unique and interesting. The sound of the album is really unique, It’s sort of like Autopsy but really not in the same way. Every song has its own theme musically, some of it is straight death-doom (i.e, “Games of Humiliation” “And Only Hunger Remains”) there’s also a good chunk of fast-grind/groove death in there as well (i.e, “Shrunken and Mummified Bitch” “Smash”). It’s very impressive how this unique sound managed to work so well. Their first album is also really quite good but is more generic and less interesting. Production wise, this album is mixed/mastered really well. This is one of those albums where the bass is quite audible and thank god because the bass tone is really good, it sort of has a unique sound I don’t know my pedals well so I can’t tell exactly but I think it’s a flanger pedal? I’m guessing that Jacek got his tone from Peter Steele because it sounds similar to the bass tone in Retaliation. The guitar tone is also pretty decent, more traditionally death metal, it sounds very mid/treble heavy which is a good move considering that it leaves room for the other instruments (mainly the bass). The sound of this album is very versatile and is one of the greatest death metal albums ever made (personally it’s my number one album ever made, which should tell you something). I really cannot recommend this album enough, Been Caught Buttering is fantastic and an essential listen to any metal fan.
